Julie Marchant Hargreaves

Julie Marchant Hargreaves, 70, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by her family after a short illness.
Julie was born on August 25, 1949, in Savannah, Georgia, where she lived until her passing. In 1969, she began her career breaking barriers as one of the first women appointed to the original Chatham County Police Department as well as the first woman to receive the rank of Sergeant. During her tenure, Julie found success in all her endeavors, achieving many notable career accomplishments including Expert Marksman in firearms. She also served in many capacities during her time on the force, including the patrol division, Detective for the Juvenile Division, as well as Sergeant of the Metro Drug Squad. One of her crowing accomplishments came as a champion for women in the workplace where she fought hard for the implementation of uniform pants for female officers. She was also a founding member of the Rape Crisis Center. Julie retired in 1989 with the rank of Sergeant.
Julie’s greatest passion was her family and friends and all who had the honor to know her felt loved and cared for. She enjoyed shopping, gardening, and crafting and was a skilled quilter and an avid sewer.
She is survived by her husband, Eddie Hargreaves; son, Russell Browne and wife Karen, two brothers, Ray Marchant and Ike Marchant (Machelle), and countless nieces, nephews and cousins. Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Lemmie and Hazel Marchant, sister Carolyn Marchant Mahany, and sister-in-law, Gladys Marchant.
Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm Monday, January 13, 2020 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
The service to celebrate the life of Julie will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 2:30 pm at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel. Graveside services will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
