Julia Gould Powell Newsome

Julia Gould Powell Newsome, age 90, of Savannah passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at home.

Mrs. Newsome was born on October 20, 1930 in Savannah, the daughter of the late Oliver Yates Powell and Dorothy Bacon Powell. She was a graduate of Savannah High School and continued her formal education at Armstrong Junior College. She worked alongside her husband, Thomas Edward Newsome, Sr. as a bookkeeper with Newsome GMC. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Garden Club, the Alee Shrine Ladies Auxiliary, and was an avid bridge player.

Mrs. Newsome was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Thomas Edward Newsome, Sr.; brother, Oliver “Buddy” Powell; and sister, Virginia Powell Hornkohl. She is survived by her children, Julie Newsome Nacci (Brian), Thomas Edward “Tom” Newsome, Jr., and Nancy Newsome Opper (John); brother, Captain Hal B. Powell, U.S. Navy (Ret); grandchildren, Adam (Jennifer), Eric, and Alexandra (Casey); and great-grandchild, Noah.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
