Joseph Howard Wilson

December 13, 1950 — September 26, 2022

Joseph Howard Wilson died unexpectedly on September 26, 2022, at Memorial Medical Center.

Joe is survived by his children, Rachel and J.C.; his former wife, Becky, with whom he remained friends to the end; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many dear friends, including Tommy, Earl, Frank, David, Butch, and Cora.

Joe was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1950, the sixth and last child of Rose and Pelzer Wilson. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.

Joe attended Groves High School (class of ’69), Lee College, Armstrong State College, and Savannah Tech. He was chief engineer at Georgia Pacific and Memorial Medical Center for many years; owned Mack’s Gun Shop in Garden City; was a master gunsmith; a senior firearms instructor at several police departments and at Young Harris University; and served on the police forces of both Pooler and Garden City. Despite his many skills and accomplishments, Joe always said that he wanted to be a Marine and a lawyer, but he would tell anyone who would listen that instead, he raised a Marine (his son), and a lawyer (his daughter).

There was no prouder or more devoted father than Joe. His constant and unconditional love mirrored the love of our heavenly Father, and we were privileged to experience God’s love through him every day. His deep faith, integrity, and love for people was evident to all who crossed his path. Though we mourn his loss, we celebrate his impact and his life well-lived. We weep now, but we rejoice that he is in God’s presence and that we will surely see him again.

A memorial service is planned for 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Garden City Chapel on Hwy 80 in Garden City, with lunch following at Spanky’s in Pooler, where Joe met his friends for lunch almost every day.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Georgia Legal Services Program or the Semper Fi & America’s Fund.
