Brother Joseph Teston Fms

January 24, 1921 — December 22, 2022

Brother Joseph Damian Teston, FMS, passed away peacefully at Champagnat Hall in Bronx, New York on December 22, 2022. The Brothers of Champagnat Hall were by his side praying with him when he died at the age of 101.

Francis Joseph Teston was born on January 24, 1921 as the sixth child of Furman Mack Teston and Mabel Cerveau Teston of Savannah, Georgia.

He was predeceased by his brothers Walter, Furman, Richard, Willard, and his sister Mabel.

He is survived by his nieces Sue Ann T. Coley (Bruce) of Michigan, Mary Kraay Cabaniss (Lionel) of South Carolina, his nephews Furman Mack Teston, Jr (Diana), and Don Teston of Savannah, Georgia. Survivors also include several grand-nieces, grand-nephews and his godchild, Beverly Cooper.

Joseph Teston lived a remarkable life in service to his Lord and devotion to his religious order of The Marist Brothers. He was humble and kind in every way and lived a lifelong commitment to providing education and help to the poor and needy. He attended Marist Grammar School in Savannah, Marist Novitiate in New York and received his advanced degree from Columbia University. He was most proud of his time spent in the Philippines, where with three of his Marist Brothers, starting in 1948, was instrumental in the success of developing the Marist Missions. These village schools started small and grew into what are now thriving Catholic institutions of elementary, high school and college learning centers.

Joseph was loved deeply by his entire family and his many friends worldwide. He was devoted and dedicated to the Marist Institute and the Marist Missions. There was never a task or duty that could not be accomplished in the most professional, dignified and moral way possible. He admired the devoted work of all religious orders and always made time to visit the Carmelites at their Savannah Monastery.

The Marist Brothers honored Joseph on his 100th birthday in recognizing his amazing 83 years of devotion to his beloved Order of the Marist Brothers.

A Funeral Mass of the Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will take place at the Marist Retreat Center in Esopus, New York on January 24, 2023 followed by a burial in the Marist Cemetery.

A Mass will also take place, in his memory on January 31, 2023 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Savannah, Georgia. The Celebrant will be Father Thomas Murphy.
