Joseph Emory (Joe) Stalnaker, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, died Wednesday, May 31, 2023, after a long battle with Agent Orange-related Parkinson’s disease.
Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Joe was a man who loved his family, his hometown, and his country. He was a proud graduate of Savannah High School, class of 66, and a proud Vietnam veteran, who served in the U.S. Army Fifth Artillery Battalion, attaining the rank of Sargent. He started his life-long career as a salesman at an early age, helping in his father’s furniture store in downtown Savannah. He enjoyed meeting people, hearing their stories and worked for years in sales with Firestone, furniture sales, car sales and finally in RV sales where he excelled and had many return customers as their families grew or as they downsized. He loved hearing about their travels and meeting the pets, which were most always part of the RV experience he explained.
Joe was happiest on a golf course, spending time with his granddaughter Sophie, or dropping by Starbucks on Broughton Street in the evening to get a cup of coffee and then walk along the riverfront with wife Lynn. He was one of those guys who could “fix stuff” and liked to tinker. He was an encyclopedia of Savannah in the "good ole days" of the sixties: the music and dances, the skating rink, the ballfields, the coolest cars and best teen hangouts.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Stalnaker Sr. and Dorothy Flanders Stalnaker. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lynn Hall Stalnaker, a loving partner and devoted caregiver through his health challenges; his son Joseph Duncan Stalnaker of Atlanta; his daughter Sarah Lynn Stalnaker and granddaughter Sophia Lynn Stalnaker of Bluffton, SC; his brothers Robert Stalnaker Jr. and Roy Stalnaker of Savannah, niece, Kym Stalnaker Hodges, nephews Robert (Trey) Stalnaker III and John Paul Stalnaker of Savannah, an uncle Alan Flanders formerly of Swainsboro, an aunt Reba Flanders of Florida. and close friend and frequent golf partner Marlene Sickler of Bluffton, SC. He is also survived by the large, close Flanders clan of cousins as well as Lynn’s large Hall family of sisters, brother, nieces and nephews.
