Joseph A. Holmen (60) died Friday, July 24, 2020 at his home. He was born in Savannah in 1959. He was a graduate of Benedictine Military School class of 1977. Joe spent the happiest years of his life behind the bar at Jim Collins where he dispensed beer and his opinion. He was never shy about what he thought on any subject, usually in his own colorful language. Savannah has lost one of the dwindling few of true downtown legends.
Joe was a very outspoken fan of the Atlanta Braves and University of Georgia football. Joe was a musician who played in numerous local bands. He sang and played guitar to the music of Tom Waits.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Karl A. Holmen, Mary Daily (Mamie) Holmen, and his brother John Daily Holmen. He is survived by his brother Karl Holmen III (Cynthia), and Bobby Holmen of Savannah and his sister Mary H Ellis (Chip) of Nashville, TN. Two Nieces Lauren M Schwan of Savannah and Margot Suchan of California. Joe is also survived by all of his many friends.
Visitation 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday July 28 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive. Funeral mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist Wednesday July 29 at 10:00 am.
The Holmen family is forever grateful to Lyndy Brannen and Doug Boykin for being there for Joe.
