John "Bob" Briley

d. July 30, 2017

John Robert "Bob" Briley, 82, went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2017 following a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Anne (Merritt) Briley, four children, David (Andrea) of North Augusta, SC, Danny (Emily) of Franklin, TN, Debbie Thomas (Jeff) of Savannah, GA, and Doyle (Nicole) of Pensacola, FL, five grandchildren, Mary Kathryn, Bethany, Caroline, Matthew, and Benjamin, a brother, Jackie and a sister Sue (Bohanon). He was preceded in death by a sister Alma Faye (Nickels) and a grandson, Jonathan Michael Briley.

Bob Briley was born in Dutch Mills, AR on December 25, 1934 to the late Clarence Emmanuel and Jimmie Katherine (Hodges) Briley. He grew up in Muskogee, OK and graduated from Muskogee Central High School in 1953. Following two years in the army he attended Columbia Bible College in response to God's call on his life into full time Christian service. While there he met his wife, Patricia, and they were married on August 25, 1961. They followed God's leading to Venezuela where they served as missionaries with The Evangelical Alliance Mission working as church planters for 15 years. He was used to build up and strengthen several churches in Venezuela. Following their return from the mission field he served as the pastor of Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church in Savannah, GA for 14 years. His passion for missions led to the development of a strong missions program at the church that continues today. From there he went on to pastor a church in Estill, SC for 4 years before retiring to Shellman Bluff, GA. But it seems that retirement did not suit him. He soon accepted a call to pastor a church in Crescent, GA where he served for 4 years before retiring again. Then he served as interim pastor in churches in Townsend and Darien before accepting another call to pastor Shellman Bluff Baptist Church where he served for 5 years helping them complete a building program before retiring again in August, 2011. Following this third retirement he went on to serve in interim and supply positions at churches in Hinesville, Crescent, Fleming, and Jesup, GA. He continued to preach as opportunities arose until he was physically unable to do so. He was always humbled that God would use his "simple sermons" to minister to the hearts and lives of the people he served.

Remembrances may be made to the Gideons  International, 13 Isle of Pines Dr, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 or Compassus Hospice, 107 Southern Blvd Suite 203, Savannah, GA 31405.
