John R. Comer, Jr.

August 16, 1947 — June 20, 2023

John R. Comer, Jr was welcomed into his Heavenly home on Monday, June 20,2023.

He was born August 16, 1947 in Longview, WA to Thelma Burris and John, Sr. He grew up in Savannah and graduated from Savannah High School in 1965. He and Janis, his high school sweetheart, met on the school bus and were happily married for over 55 years. It was truly a marriage made in heaven. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably during the Vietnam Era. He continued his military tenure with the Georgia Air National Guard working with aerospace ground equipment and retired as a Master Sergeant with 27 years experience. After 4 years in the Navy John began his civilian career with Nettles Refrigeration, becoming an electrical instrumentation maintenance mechanic. He worked for the Department of Defense while continuing his service in the Georgia Air National Guard. He ultimately had a successful career with Union Camp (International Paper) from which he retired after 30 plus years of service.

He was a faithful member of Community Bible Church of Savannah and dearly loved worshipping with his church family and enjoyed greeting them on Sunday mornings. He was also grateful for the CBC Thursday morning men’s group and all they meant to him. He was a humble man of deep faith and strong conviction. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him for his quick wit and sense of humor.

He loved telling stories and engaging in conversation with everyone he met. He was an avid Racquetball player and spent many happy retirement hours in the gym. He loved Georgia Football, and on Saturdays in the Fall would find him watching the Dawgs play. (Beat Florida!)

Mr. Comer is also survived by a daughter, Jennifer Griffin (Chris); a son, Jeff Comer (Jami); siblings, David Comer (Anne), Carolyn Shannon (Kevin), and Richard Crumley; and grandchildren, Jackson, Maddie, Grayson, Bray, and Grant; stepfather, Jack Crumley; and many dear friends and acquaintances. John was predeceased by his parents, Thelma Crumley and John Comer, Sr.
