John D. McCord passed away on Monday, January 22nd, 2018 at his home. He was a loving and faithful son, brother, husband, uncle, father and grandfather. He proudly served his country in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War spanning a total of 26 years. He made many lifetime friends and many memories during this time; and would regularly share stories of his travels and escapades from abroad. Upon retiring from the Merchant Marines, he started working at Atlantic Wood Industries and subsequently retired from there after 18 years. He spent many years traveling with his wife, Evelyn McCord, as part of the Rebel Rousers camping club, where many long lasting friendships and memories were made. He was the primary caregiver for his wife, Evelyn, when she was diagnosed with Alzheimers, and he was patient and kind with her until the very end of her days. He was hardworking, fair and honest to everyone that met him. He was a fifty year member of the Jacques De Molay Lodge No. 389, F. & A.M. of New Orleans, LA. He is predeceased by his mother, Sallie Kate McCord Anderson, father, John Durwood McCord, brothers Sanford McCord and Billy McCord, sisters, Mary Bullard and Catherine McCord, wife, Evelyn L. McCord, daughter, Susan M. Gore, and grandson, Barry C. Davis. He leaves behind to cherish his memory the following: brother Donald (Marilyn) McCord, sisters Nan (Sonny) Brewer and Ann Anderson, Step-son Terry (Pat) Hinely, granddaughter Leigh (Michael) McGaughey, and several special nieces and nephews. He will be missed dearly by any and all that ever met him or knew him.
Services: Visitation will be at 5 - 7 pm Thursday at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel and Funeral Service at 10 am Friday Graveside at Bonaventure Cemetery.
