John L. Underwood

John L. Underwood, age 89, of Savannah passed away Monday, February 15, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Underwood was born on August 23, 1931 in Denton, GA, the son of the late John A. Underwood and Mabel Chaney Livingston. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for valor and was honorably discharged as Corporal. Following his military tenure he attended Armstrong State College while working with GAF where he worked as a Plant Engineer and ultimately retired as Plant Manager. He was also the owner of Underwood Inc. and K&P Electric. He was a member of IBEW #508 and was a longtime member of Windsor Forest Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Deacons and was active with his Sunday School Class. Outside of work and civic involvement he enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Underwood was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Underwood Kemp; brothers, Sherwin Underwood and Gerald Underwood; and sister, Judy Milano. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jean Underwood; daughter, Patti Hendricks (Wayne); sister, Sue Wilson; grandchildren, Stephen Hendricks (Ansley) and Carey Hendricks (Jessica); and great grandchildren, Karen, Kelley and Cooper Hendricks.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406. The family will be receiving friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow the funeral service at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
