John Schuster Brannen, 68, of Savannah, GA, died on April 9, 2019. He was born on March 18, 1951 to William and Dorothy Brannen. He is survived by his wife Cam (Mathis), daughter Jessica, brother Alex, nephew Billy, (Miwa), niece Salua, four great-neices and one great-nephew.
John graduated from H.V. Jenkins High School in 1969. He enlisted in the US Army from 1969 to 1978. He was a Staff Sergeant E6 in Company B, 3rd Battalion, 11th Special Forces Group. He was a Radio Operator Supervisor on an Operational "A" Team.
John worked at Savannah Electric from 1980 until his retirement in 2006. He served as Engineering Manager.
John was a visionary and conceptualized a community-based mapping system. He was persistent and gained support from leadership from Savannah Electric, City of Savannah, Chatham County, Metropolitan Planning Commission and Atlanta Gas for what is now known as Savannah Area Geographic Information System (SAGIS). He served as the director of SAGIS until his retirement from Savannah Electric.
John enjoyed the outdoors, camping with dear friends, bicycling, motorcycles, and the Brotherhood of his Army Unit.
John died following a 6-month courageous struggle to recover from a stroke. Thanks to staff at numerous facilities including Augusta University Medical Center, Candler Hospital, St Joseph's Hospital, PruittHealth, Kindred At Home, Comfort Keepers, and Hospice Savannah. The family is thankful for the many friends who supported and visited John until his death.
The family is especially thankful to his Green Beret unit who funded and replaced flooring at the house to facilitate John's care at home. In this effort, a fund called the "John Brannen Project" was created to offer assistance to other military brothers who have need. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the "John Brannen Project".
