Joel Patterson Shaw, 81, of Savannah, Georgia passed away at his home on Thursday, January 11, 2018. Joel was born in 1936 in Syracuse, New York to his late parents, Curtis Wellington Shaw and Marian Patterson Shaw. When he was a young child the family moved to Georgia. As a teenager, Joel delivered the Savannah Evening Press on his bicycle and his younger brother later took over his route. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1954 and attended college in New York. Joel was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Georgia Army National Guard. He had a long career in sales beginning with the Savannah Morning News in the advertising department. Joel then worked for Sears Roebuck and Company where he first met his wife, Helen. They were married 50 years. After leaving Sears, Joel worked for many years in the beverage industry and retired from Harry's Liquorama.
Joel loved gardening, cooking, assembling jigsaw puzzles, watching Syracuse basketball, Atlanta Falcons football and the Atlanta Braves. He also loved all Savannah minor league teams. In his youth, he was a proud member of the Knothole Club at Grayson Stadium. He had a special love for Jazz music and was a long time member of the Coastal Jazz Association. He was a life-long Boy Scout beginning with the troop at Blessed Sacrament Church. He later had an active role in leadership in Troop 12 at First Presbyterian Church. Joel was also a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.
Joel is survived by his wife, Helen Shaw; son, Joel Patterson Shaw, Jr.; daughter, Holly Shaw Shepley (Matthew); and grandchildren, Lucy, Simon, Luke and Clifton Jake; all of Macon, GA; brother, Douglas William Shaw of Boise, ID; two nieces and a grandniece and grandnephew.
Joel's family would like to thank Dr. Paul Bradley and his staff, and Tasha and Roland of Hospice Savannah for the loving care they gave Joel.

Visitation will be held from 3:00pm until 4:00pm, Sunday, January 21 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah. A memorial service will be held at 4:00pm, in the funeral home chapel.
