Jewell Labelle Lindsey Evans, 98, of Savannah, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 5, 2016 under the care of Hospice Savannah.
She was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, on May 27, 2018. The only child of Robert B. and Stella W. Lindsey. The family moved to Savannah while Jewell was a child. She was educated in the public schools of Savannah, graduating from Savannah High School. During World War II she was employed at Hunter Field. She later worked for Radio Station WTOC for a number of years before becoming affiliated with the State of Georgia. Jewell was retired from the State of Georgia as a Supervisor in the Department of Family and Children Services. She retired in 1982.
Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Stella Lindsey and her former husband, William Evans.
She is survived by her cousins, Susan Moreau (John) of Virginia Beach, VA, Jennie Moreau Paden of Virginia Beach, VA, Steve Hair of Clark Hill, SC, Linda H. Murphy of Henderson, NV, Barry Hair of Birmingham, AL, Dr. Beth Jones of Atlanta, and a special friend, Lynford B. "Lynn" Hadwin, of Savannah, Ga.
While Jewell never had any biological children, she was Mother and Aunt to untold numbers. She impacted the lives of children and adults over the span of her life. God gave her a special gift of "Loving everyone she met". She was a long time member of Bible Baptist Church serving in various capacities. She taught Sunday School for children and young ladies Bible studies. Many of these young people came to know Christ as Savior and Devoted their life to serving the Lord.
A special acknowledgement and expression of thanks to her many neighbors who kept a watchful eye and assisted her so faithfully. Her Physicians and their staff was always extremely kind and loving giving her special attention and care. She adored each of them.
Active Pallbearers will be the Board of Deacons of Bible Baptist Church, and Bobby Mosley and Herman Mongin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Masters Sunday School Class, of which she was a member.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, August 8, 2016 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug 9, 2016 at Bible Baptist Church, 4700 Skidaway Road, Savannah, Ga., with Dr. Herbert Hubbard, assisted by Dr. John Rainwater and Rev. Tommy East, officiating. Mrs. Evans will be taken to the church at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to lie in state.
Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
