Jerry W. Workman, age 78, died December 29, 2011 under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Mr. Workman was born in Lewis County, KY, but grew up in Napa Valley, CA. He is the son of Sherman Workman and Vada Lewis Workman. He was in the Korean War at 17 years old, driving LS4's bringing supplies to our troops. Jerry also was at the Bay of Pigs. Jerry was a submariner during the Cold War. His submarine was held down by the Russians for several weeks at a time. He traveled all over the world, helping to keep our country safe. His last commission was on the USS Threadfin. He retired from the United States Navy in 1972 after 22 years of service. Jerry was a devoted member of Evangel Temple Full Gospel Church. He committed his life to the love of God, family and church. Jerry contracted all over the US building and repairing airplanes. He retired from aircraft contracting from Gulf Stream at the age of 70. His joy was helping anyone who needed repairs to their homes, yards, cars or trucks. Jerry and Sharon were married on August 5, 1992. They met in Columbus, OH, and moved to Savannah to be close to Sharon's daughter. Jerry was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Virgil Workman and Stan Workman; one sister, Bonnie Glidden.
Survivors include wife, Sharon Workman; two daughters, Lori Marie Feigner of Beaverton, OR, and Geri Gwen Strickland of Hillsboro, OR; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Holly and Steve Harn of Savannah; step-son, Mark Wetzel; seven grandchildren, Emily, Eric Feigner and Elke Henry, Monty, Eddie and Tom Strickland, and Jacquelyn Harn; and several great-grandchildren. Jerry had one sister, Dawn Stevens, Circleville, OH.; a brother, Sherman Workman of Simia Valley, CA., and several nieces and nephews survive.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30pm, Friday, January 27, 2012, at Evangel Temple Church, 5704 Jasmine Ave, Savannah, GA 31406, with Pastor David Marchant officiating.
The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church.
