Jean Smith Pollard

Jean Smith Pollard passed away Wednesday, January 05, 2022. She was born September 11, 1921 to Eddie Lee Terrell Smith and Edward Joseph Smith Jr. in Jacksonville, FL. The family moved to Stuart, FL during 1925 when her father was appointed county judge by the Governor of Florida to the newly formed Martin County. She graduated from Stuart High School as valedictorian of her class in 1938. She attended Stetson University in Deland, FL and became a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. In 1940 she attended and graduated from the Atlanta School of Commerce.

In 1941 she married Edwin Moore Pollard Jr. of Atlanta. She worked under civil service at the various bases where her husband was stationed. After the war, the couple lived in Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Charleston before moving permanently to Savannah in 1961. She resumed her civil service career as secretary to chief of construction division with the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 1977 she spent a year in Saudi Arabia working for the Corps of Engineers.

In 1983 she retired with 29 years of government service. During her retirement she was a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years and also volunteered at St. George’s Episcopal Church. In 1979 she joined the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and subsequently typed and mailed the newsletters each month for several years.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 33 years, sisters, Betty Pryor and Beverly Smith; her eldest son, Edwin Moore Pollard; and her brother, Edward Joseph Smith III.

She is survived by her son, Lorenzo Jones Pollard; grandson, Edwin Moore Pollard IV; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Vicki P. Pollard III; sister-in-law, Mrs. Edward Jane Smith; nephew, Ted Smith; niece, Mrs. Cathy Stevens; 2 grand nephews; and 1 grand niece.

The family will be receiving friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 10, 2022 at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 15 Willow Road, Savannah, GA 31419. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West on Dean Forest Road.
