Janie Durham Shuman passed away on Tuesday, October 10th in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia at the age of 70.
Janie was a graduate of Savannah High School, The University of Tennessee and held a Master's Degree from Vanderbilt University in Higher Education Administration.
Most of her career Janie was a Systems Analyst for Vanderbilt University. She served as President and Secretary of the Women of the ELCA, St. Paul's Chapter in Savannah.
Janie loved books and was an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren,distance running and aerobics classes. Janie always found joy in the Fall colors of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the white sand of the Gulf of Mexico and a good cup of coffee. She inherited her substantial cooking skills from her mother and bravely faced the unreasonable expectation of baking the perfect chocolate pound cake for every family gathering.
A kind, gentle and selfless person, Janie set aside many hopes and dreams she had for her own life to provide a great life for three children who survive her: Rachel Long, Jonas White and Adam White.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jeanette Durham and is survived by her husband, Robert Shuman; brother, Sam Durham; sister-in-law, Jan Durham; daughters, Mary S. Shuman and Christine Shuman McCutchen and husband Michael McCutchen and grandchildren, Macy, Finn and Alexandra.; niece, Heather Durham Nadler; son-in-law, Brent Long and grandchildren Charlotte Long and Ben Long.
Services will be held on Saturday, Oct 14th starting with a visitation at 1:00PM in Hoffner Hall at St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 W. 31st St. Savannah, to be followed with a memorial service at 2:00PM. Burial will take place at Bonaventure Cemetery immediately following the service.
