Janice “Elaine” Sheppard McDowell, 71, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. She was born in Savannah on June 4, 1949, to Carl “Bill” and Jeanette Sheppard. A 1967 graduate of Jenkins High School, Elaine retired as a realty specialist from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 40 years of service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple and an active member of the Jonathan and Patience Long Women’s Mission Group.
She was a sweet southern lady who fiercely loved her family. She loved serving others and had a kind and giving heart. She enjoyed reading, especially when she had her grandchildren in her lap. Her beautiful soprano voice, which was once used to lull her grandbabies to sleep, is now being heard in the Heavenly choir.
Elaine is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, John McDowell, a daughter, Alison (John) Alexander, two stepsons, John (Sabrina) McDowell and Mark (April) McDowell, eight grandchildren, Mark (Taylor) McDowell, Shelby (Austin) Volkert, Hunter McDowell, Connor, Brady, Aiden, Evan, and Grayson Alexander, and four great grandchildren, Cayson, Ella, Waylon, and Aiden.
The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2021 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
