After a courageous fight to stay with her family here in this life, Mrs. Janet Mary Franklin Campbell (Jan), 96, of Savannah Georgia, went to Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and join her family and loved ones who had already left to go there before her on Monday, March 29, 2021.
She was born in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 1924 and grew up in the North Shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois. She was the first born and first generation American citizen born to Charles Thomas Franklin from London, England and Beatrice Rose Mock Franklin from Cardiff, Wales.
She graduated from Nicholas Senn High School and was a schoolmate of the actor and comedian Harvey Korman. During this time Jan worked for Walgreens on Madison Avenue and State Street. In 1943 while working at the SS Kresge Company in Evanston she met and soon thereafter married Naval Aviator James Edward Campbell (Ed) from Concord, Tennessee. The following year she gave birth to their first child Carolyn Ann Campbell (1944 - 1972).
In 1944 - 1945 while Ed was a US Marine SBD Dauntless dive bomber pilot with the VMSB-244 Bombing Banshees during World War II (Pacific theater) Jan and baby Carolyn lived back in Ed’s hometown of Concord, Tennessee. Jan spent the remainder of her amazing life living in the South, from San Marcos, Texas to Moultrie, Georgia to Dothan, Alabama and in 1968 Mr. and Mrs Campbell and family settled in Savannah, Georgia.
During her beautiful life she did experience the heartache of losing her beloved Carolyn (1944-1972), her husband Ed (1916 - 1973), and her first born son Eddie (1947 - 2003) but she always kept her thankful heart, her positive attitude and her genuinely kind spirit.
Jan was a retired sales associate at Belk in the Oglethorpe and Savannah malls with 25 years of service and she enjoyed her time there. Many of her co-workers would also become her close friends.
She had many interests and loved dining out with her family and friends, going on car rides, attending family gatherings and birthday parties. She enjoyed her garden full of song birds and beautiful azaleas and looked forward to their pink, white and salmon colored blooms each Spring. Jan loved the scent of fresh flowers.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Savannah. She was a regular attendee each year at the Savannah Scottish Games and was a member of the Clan Campbell Society of North America.
Jan would watch her Sunday morning church service broadcast from First Baptist of Columbia and in the evenings she liked to watch the Lawrence Welk show. During the weekday she was a regular listener of the Rush Limbaugh radio program. Jan was delighted to be in the audience for 5 live tapings of the Rush Limbaugh TV show in the early 1990s.
She was gentle yet strong as well as kind, caring, humble and thankful. Jan would often say “Attitude is everything” and she provided a warm, loving home for her children. She did her absolute best to instill Christian values into their lives. She always made sure that her family knew that they were welcomed, safe and loved at home. During her last weeks and days at home she would often tell her children “I love my family. I have such a beautiful family.” Every moment spent with her was truly a blessing from God.
She is survived by her sisters Beverly Greca of Jupiter, Florida and Helen Mayberry of Edwardsburg, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Charles Franklin.
Jan’s surviving children are her daughters Gayle Andrews (Dennis), Angela Prewitt (Leland), Linda Campbell and her youngest son Jon David Campbell (Elena). She has four grandchildren Payton James Prewitt (Elisa), Joy Christine Boltz (Matt), Linda Lee Rodgers (John) and Garrett Joseph Campbell. She also has seven great grandchildren.
