Jane Coursey

d. June 13, 2017

Jane Shurling Coursey, 82, of Savannah, died Monday, June 12th at Hospice House of Savannah, surrounded by her family.
Jane was born on December 20, 1934 in Bulloch County, Georgia, to Maude Sowell and Ernest Garrett Shurling. She was reared in Bulloch County and graduated from Brooklet High School in 1952. Shortly after, she moved to Savannah where she met the love of her life, Toby Coursey, outside of the old YWCA building on Liberty Street. They were married in 1954 and spent 56 very full years together. Early in their marriage they were blessed with a beautiful daughter but the Lord took her shortly after birth. Several years later another blessing came their way and they named her Joy Lynn Coursey. A few years after that their family was complete with the birth of their son, Robert Alan Coursey.
Jane retired from the Savannah Electric & Power Company in 1984, and in the years that followed continued to enjoy the friendship of The Girls she worked with there. She also sold Tupperware for many years, rising to the level of Unit Manager of the Starlighters, recruiting her son as the district's first male consultant, and ensuring her family's storage needs would be met for years to come. Jane loved traveling, slot machines, and rooting for her beloved Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.Their 9-42016 season was especially sweet for her, with both a win over Georgia at Athens and a win over Kentucky at the TaxSlayer Bowl - a fitting final gift for one of Tech's biggest fans. Go Jackets! Sting 'Em!! What's the Good Word??
Jane was preceded in death by her first born, by her husband Hubert Lamar "Toby" Coursey, by her parents, Ernest Garrett Shurling and Maude Sowell Shurling, and by her brothers William Garrett "Bill" Shurling and Ernest Randall Shurling.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy and son-in-law Terry Walker, her son Robert and daughter-in-law Debi Coursey all of Savannah, her brother and sister-in-law Tony & Emma Shurling of Brooklet, her sisters-in-law Judy Shurling of Rincon, Loretta Shurling of Ellabell, Marguerite Coursey Thompson of Statesboro, Sarah Coursey of Rincon, and Betty Coursey of Jacksonville and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved with her whole heart.
Services will be held Saturday, June 17th at Isle of Hope Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors between 1 and 2 PM in the Fellowship Hall and a memorial service will follow in the Chapel at 2PM. Internment will take place on Monday, June 19th at 1PM in the Newington City Cemetery. All are welcome to join her children as they lay both of their parents to rest.
