Mr. James "Jim" W. Strickland, age 92, of Savannah, died on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at his residence. He was born on April 2, 1933 in Savannah to Hearst Wilson Strickland and Eloise Janet Lariscy and lived here all his life. Jim graduated from Savannah High School and served in the United States Navy. He was in the Navy during the Korean War, as a gunner's mate, where he spent 6 months. He was stationed in San Diego, California and returned to Savannah after he was discharged. When he returned home he landed a job with Bowie Jackson Tax and Accounting Services, where he met the lady that would become his wife, Barbara Manning. He would continue working and prepare taxes for family and friends and opening Strickland Tax Service for the next 60 years. He closed his business in January 2025 for health reasons. Jim was hired by the Savannah Fire Department in 1961, going on to make Captain in the 1970's and retired in 1988 . He had a love for animals, taking in many strays, woodworking, painting, drawing, airplanes, collecting cameras, and playing the piano. He especially loved his family and Mickey Mouse, he was known as Captain Mickey Mouse. Jim had a very dry sense of humor, was a prankster, witty, but above all he had a heart of gold. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of sixty-one years, Barbara Manning Strickland; a daughter, Amanda Strickland; a grandson, Wilson Ray Watson; and his brothers, Edward Strickland, Robert Strickland and Ray Strickland.
His family includes his children, Daniel W. Strickland, Penny Strickland and Sondra Martin and her husband Tracy; his grandchildren, Shane Watson, Matthew Watson, Michael Martin, John Martin, David Martin, DJ Strickland, Dylan Strickland, and Abby Strickland; four great-grandchildren, Kane Monthie, Kayleb Watson, Scarlet Strickland and Greysen Strickland; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Bible Baptist Church from 12:00 noon until just prior to the funeral service. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Herbert Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwich Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be DJ Strickland, Dylan Strickland, Matthew Watson, John Martin, Kaleb Watson, and Billy Collins.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members on Savannah Fire Department.
