James “Mike” Sims, 73, of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully on March 18,2021 after a short illness.
Born on September 16, 1947, Mike was the youngest son of Jeff D. and Annie (Wilson)Sims. He grew up in the old Savannah Gardens neighborhood, graduated from Savannah High School in 1965 and attended Savannah Technical College where he completed a degree in drafting. He started working for Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung in 1973 as a draftsman and
gradually worked his way up the ranks fully retiring in June 2020 as the Director of Surveying.
Mike was quite the comedian and always had a smile on his face. He loved the Lord and was known to share his love for God with all he met; his favorite saying was “God loves you and so do I.” He was a member of Freedom Fellowship and the local Christian Business Men's Connection (CBMC) group. He enjoyed spending early weekday mornings at the Diner for a cup of coffee and fellowship with the staff and regulars; and he always made himself available to those who came in needing a friend and/or a hot meal.
Mike leaves behind his loving wife of 47 years, Mary “Robbyn” (Thornton) Sims;daughter, Jennifer; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and April; sisters, Patsy Collins and Diane (Howard) Pearce; brothers, Winston and Jeff; and several nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert, and his beloved dogs, Persia, Dusty, and
Maggie Mae.
Visitation will be held at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31406 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2021 with a service immediately following in the chapel. The family plans to hold a celebration of life get-
together later in the year for family, friends and colleagues.
