James L Mott Sr, age 87, of Savannah, GA passed away Friday March 27, 2020. James was born in Rochester MN where he resided with his parent who owned and operated a roller-skating rink. James moved to North Carolina where he worked on his uncle’s farm, meet the love of his life, and graduated from Turkey High School. James married Willie Lee King and moved to Raleigh, NC and graduated from NC State. His Electrical Engineering career in Aeronautics included pioneering solar cells on the Pegasus Satellite. His work took him many places and included working with NASA on Apollo missions, the Learjet and with many more major corporations. He retired from Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah, GA in 1992.
More than anything else, James was a family man. Having lost his parents in his early teens, he knew the importance of family. Most of his children’s school years were lived in Sharpsburg, MD. “He was the world’s best father and grandfather who knew how to create a loving environment.” The family’s hobbies included traveling, camping, water skiing, home movies, frequent visits to see family in Richmond, VA and a lot of playtime around their country home. “Dad enjoyed his toys and gadgets. One his favorite toys was a brand new 1961 Volvo P1800 which is still has in the garage today”.
James was a faithful member and former treasurer at Crossroads Baptist Church. The church will most recently remember him arriving on his red scooter which he drove from his house directly into the sanctuary. Anyone who has ever meet James will know him to be the consummate jokester. “There was a lot of laughter in our home and a lot of love”.
James was preceded in death by his parent Leroy and Eunice Mae Mott, his son, James Mott, Jr, and his wife, Willie Lee Mott. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Mott and Pamela Ann Mott, both of Savannah, GA; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
