James Robert Mccready

September 27, 1942 — October 8, 2023

James R. McCready (81) passed away at home on Sunday, October 8, 2023 after a short illness. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary C.
McCready, and two daughters, Teresa Harnden and Amanda De Varona. He also leaves behind three wonderful grandchildren Rebeca, Michael, and Olivia.

Jim was born on September 27, 1942 in Saltville, VA. After high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Savannah, GA. After completing his time in the military, he continued to work for the Civil Service as a firefighter and was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield until his retirement in 1992. While working at Hunter, he simply became known as “Mac” to his fellow firefighters. After his first granddaughter was born, she began to call him “Bumper” and that became his most treasured nickname.

Aside from the love of being a firefighter and spending time with his family, Bumper was a huge fan of NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He enjoyed camping with long-time friends Bobby and Beth Lively. Around the house, he loved cutting the grass and took great pride in his yard. He was an excellent handyman who knew how to build and repair almost
anything. His favorite and most anticipated day of the year was not his birthday or even Christmas. It was February 15th because that’s when Valentine candy disappeared and black
jelly beans arrived on store shelves for Easter. Bumper equally loved Tootsie Rolls and pineapple upside down cake when looking for a sweet treat.

Jim will be missed terribly by those who loved him. He was a good person who worked hard to take care of his family and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. To honor his wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society or the Prader-Willi Association.
