James Ernon Hurt

March 16, 1943 — October 25, 2022

James Ernon Hurt, born March 16, 1943, died at age 79 at St. Joseph's Hospital on the morning of October 25, 2022, just days after his beloved wife, Faye McElveen, passed away.
Mr. Hurt attended Robert W. Groves High School from its opening in 1958 and played on the football team with his brother, Carl. He served in the Army for three years and was stationed in both Texas and Germany during that time.

Mr. Hurt worked most of his life at Caterpillar as a service manager (a position for which he was highly regarded) before becoming a self-employed auto mechanic. He was known in the square dancing community as one of the best callers in the tri-state area, hosting and calling weekly dances and giving lessons for the Peel-Offs and many other clubs until his retirement in 2019.

Mr. Hurt was a great man who was adored by his daughters. Beneath his seemingly stoic exterior was a strong sense of humor and endlessly giving spirit, earning him many lifelong friendships throughout the community. He always believed that a person didn't always have to be nice, but they should always be kind. Over the years he volunteered many hours to raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Mr. Hurt was preceded by his parents, Clarence Ernon Hurt and Claudine Hodges Hurt, his beloved daughter, Shelley Tatara, his brother Carl, and his wife Faye. He is survived by his two daughters, Sherry Jackson and Kelly Hurt, their husbands Edmund Jackson and Rick Miles, step- daughter Lyndi Bannister and his grandchildren, Tara, Bridgette, Nathan, Shannon, James, Frankie, Cheyenne, and Savannah, and great-grandchildren Camden, Caeden, Charlie, with Addelyn Rose on the way . He also leaves behind his many friends and square dancing colleagues.

There will not be a public ceremony per Mr. Hurt's wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to either the Muscular Dystrophy Association or The American Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

Services will be private.
