James E. Smith, 81, of Butler, TN, formerly of Savannah and widower of Nancy Jean Barbour Smith, passed away Friday, December 1st, at his home.
He was born on January 4, 1936 in Creole, MS, son of the late W.L. and Jewel Smith. He served his country in the United States Air Force. He worked at Union Camp, He raced at Savannah Speedway in his late twenty's. He worked at Diamond Ship Yard where he took a job on a tanker called the Providence Getty and moved to Wilmington, DE. After a few years he worked at American Hoechst as an electrician. He moved back to Savannah with Nancy till after her death, then moved to Butler TN where he enjoyed the remainder of his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen McCarthy and her husband, John; two grandsons, John McCarthy and his wife, Jessica and Sean McCarthy and his wife Sarah; great-granddaughter, Kimber McCarthy; a special friend, Sherree Schmees.
Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Garden City Chapel, 2794 US Highway 80 W.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
