Our beloved Jacqueline Barden Whitfield passed away on August 9, 2018 of natural causes. She was one month shy of her 81st birthday.
A native and lifelong resident of Savannah, Mrs. Whitfield was the widow of her beloved Archie Whitfield, former City Editor and columnist at the Savannah News/Press, who passed in 2005. She is survived by her daughter, Holly Whitfield Spalding (formerly Armstrong), son-in-law, Charles G. Spalding, both of Decatur, GA, her son, Arthur (Tony) Whitfield, and daughter-in-law Ann-Marie Whitfield, both of Marietta, GA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Gregory Armstrong of Mountain View, CA , Jacqueline Armstrong of Denver, CO, Rebekah Armstrong of Atlanta, GA, Allison Whitfield of Atlanta, GA, and Andrea Whitfield of Marietta, GA.
Mrs. Whitfield was a graduate of Savannah High School, class of 1955. She attended Wesleyan College (Macon), and earned her Nursing degree from Armstrong State. She worked for several years as a flight attendant for American Airlines. Later, she became an RN and patient advocate at various medical facilities and hospitals in the Savannah area. In her later years, she was a licensed massage therapist and a healing touch practitioner. She was an accomplished musician and vocalist who delighted in volunteering her talents at several churches within the Savannah area. She was very active in St. John's Episcopal Church and led the boy's choir for several years.
Mrs. Whitfield was an avid animal lover. In lieu of flowers or cards, please make donations to the Humane Society for Greater Savannah (
