John William Shaw, Jr., age 75, went to be with his Lord and Savior suddenly on Thursday, August 23, 2018. Jack, as he was known by his friends, loved Jesus, was devoted to his family, and selflessly served for many years at Bible Baptist Church. Jack was characterized by many as a man of integrity, wisdom, and compassion both in his spiritual life and work life.
Jack was born on April 6, 1943, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to Rev. John and Viola Shaw.He graduated from Penn State University. Jack married his high school sweetheart, Flo, on July 17, 1965.
He was truly a devoted husband for 53 wonderful years. They had two beautiful daughters - Judy and Jackie. In the words of Flo, "I cannot remember a day he did not show me affection and tell me he loved me. He was my life, my love, and my everything." According to Judy, "Not many children can say they have zero regrets and zero bad memories. He was the closest thing to a perfect father any girl could have." Jackie shared, "I believe I have such a wonderful relationship with my Heavenly Father because
of the precious relationship and godly role model I had in my earthly father."
Those who knew Jack best, thought of him as an encourager, a prayer warrior, and a patient, gentle giant. He cared deeply for his family, his pastors, the men in his Sunday school class, and anyone who
had a need. He took people's burdens to heart and prayed for them every day. He would go out of his way to encourage his friends and family. Jack also had a fun-loving spirit and was quick with a clever answer; he brought joy and laughter everywhere he went. Each child and grandchild remembers his special birthday song, "This is the day that you get your smacks!!!" Any time someone asked him what he was doing, he jokingly responded, "picking cherries." Jack had the most amazing memory and the ability to tell stories that kept everyone laughing. Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart doeth good like a
medicine," and he lived out that verse.
Jack was involved in ministry at every stage of his life. He worked twenty-five years in hotel management using his job as a mission field to help pastors, missionaries, and people in need. He took a personal interest in helping his employees. Over the years, he has also served in many church capacities as a youth director, Sunday school teacher, and deacon. He began his service in Pennsylvania where he was in charge of several groups of Youth for Christ. After moving to Savannah, Jack continued to work as the
Youth Director at a Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He transitioned to being a Sunday school teacher when he joined Bible Baptist Church. Additionally, he served on the Board of Deacons for twenty-five years at Bible Baptist and considered it a privilege to serve as Chairman under the leadership of three different pastors. He always had a special heart for pastors since his dad was a minister.
This was a life well-lived. While we know that our loss is great, Heaven's gain is greater. We are confident Jack saw Jesus face to face and heard the words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Jack's greatest legacy is that every member of his family has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We have peace in knowing we will all be together again one day.
He is survived by his wife Flo; his sister Marilyn Moore (Bob); his daughters Judy Crapse (Andy) and Jackie Wetmore (Kevin); his grandchildren Amanda Crapse, Stephanie Crapse, Kim Crapse, Nathan Wetmore, Alyssa Wetmore, and Kirk Wetmore.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be given to Bible Baptist Church designated for missionaries Daniel and Tori Greenfield or given to Hope Children's Home in Tampa, Florida.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, August 26, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Baker McCullough Funeral Home on Hodgson Memorial Drive. The funeral will be on Monday, August 27, at Bible Baptist Church on Skidaway Road with a viewing at 10:00 AM followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 am
