Some people called him Larry, and some knew him as Lonnie, but Herman Lawrence Harley will be remembered fondly as a musician, an educator, a father, and a friend.
He was born in 1928 to William Lawrence Harley, a Savannah Coca-Cola salesman, and Bonney Eloise Cleveland, a housewife.
He served as a teacher and principal at several public and private Chatham County schools. Larry passed peacefully on September 30 after a long illness.
In the second half of the 20th century, Larry was active in Little Theater as an actor and director and served as choir director at several churches in Savannah and South Georgia, as well as a cantor at Temple Mikveh Israel.
He was an active member of Chapel By The Sea on Tybee Island.
In 1951 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the time of the Korean War, serving his enlistment at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, North Carolina.
He follows Royann Hinely Harley in death, his wife of 54 years, who passed 22 days earlier. They are survived by three sons, Ty Harley (Jennifer), Lonnie Harley (Tina), Dana Harley, and brothers-in-law, Ron Hinely and Ashley Goodrum. He is mourned by four grandchildren, MacKenzie, Reagan, Stone, and Madeline, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
