HERBERT ISHMAEL JERNIGAN age 89, died Wednesday May 13, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
The funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 15, 2009 in the chapel of Bonaventure Funeral Home with Rev. John Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with Military Honors and Masonic Graveside rites. The family will be receiving friends Thursday evening, May 14, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Bonaventure Funeral Home.
Herbert was born January 1, 1920 in Waycross (Ware Co.) Georgia to the late William H. and Minnie (Cowart) Jernigan. He served in the Merchant Marine for 2 years prior to his service in the US Navy. Herbert was a 50 year member of the Alee Shiners Temple and a retired member of Iron Workers Local # 709 Savannah and was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church.
He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, the Late Selma Sills Jernigan of Savannah. He is survived by his children: Terry Jernigan & his wife Pam , Gail J. Hughes & her husband Jay, Chet W. Jernigan & his wife Kellie and Janice J. Bunch, all of Savannah, GA. His sisters: Doris Switzer of Clyo, GA & Nadine Briggs of Bedford, TX. Grandchildren: Timothy & Billy Jackson, Blaine Bunch, Sara, Stacy & Summer Jernigan. 5 Great Grandchildren 10 Nieces & 6 nephews. Herbert was also preceded in death by 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
