Hazel Walker Holloway, 93, passed peacefully to our Lord on Sunday, October 18, 2020. She was born in Valdosta, GA on November 4, 1926, to Howard C. and Lillie Walker. Hazel married the love of her life, Lovick P. (Hank) Holloway on January 21, 1948 and they were married 62 years before the passing of Hank in 2010. From this union, they had 3 daughters, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
Hazel was a true disciple of God, from teaching each of her children the importance of fellowship with God, learning his word and by setting the example of how a true Christian life should be led, with kindness, forgiveness, and most importantly with love.
She was a Sunday school teacher at Epworth United Methodist Church and brought her Baptist upbringing to the children at Epworth. She felt scripture was so vitally important, not only to be learned but to be memorized. She had sword drills, which are Bible verses that had to be quickly located and read aloud. She made learning God's word fun for the youth which led many to want to continue to study what she so strongly believed in.
Hazel began her career working for the Corps of Engineers in Savannah. After working for the Corps, she transferred to the U.S. Customs Laboratory where she worked as an Administrative Officer. She was a diligent employee and received numerous awards for her ability to complete tasks way before deadlines and never missing a due date on any projects.
Hazel enjoyed watching the birds at the feeders in her back yard and going out for ice cream at Leopold's, but her greatest joy in life was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and a treasured friend to many, always putting others' needs before her own.
She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and was always there when they needed her. She treasured every moment she had with each of them and her love was never ending.
Many thanks and much love we extend to our mother's caregivers, Carolyn Baker, Eula Lee, Stephanie Williams, and Beverly Lee, who were not simply caregivers, but are a part of our family. Carolyn had been with Mom for more than 10 years, previously giving wonderful care to our dad until his passing, and then continuing to care for our mom until her passing. They shared many happy times together and she was the one Mom confided in, telling her many family secrets that she still holds in her heart today. Eula was with Mom for over 6 years always bringing humor and laughter into a sometimes difficult situation. Every morning Eula had her own special way to get Mom moving. She would call her by her middle name, telling her to do the "St. Vitas Dance." Mother would appease her because she despised her middle name. By conforming, she would not have to hear it again. Stephanie was our weekend caregiver for Mom. When Mother was able, they would enjoy going outside to listen to the birds and watch the neighbors and cars go by. Beverly came to us last and was only with Mom several months but during that time they spent numerous hours at the kitchen table watching the birds at the feeders and coloring in the coloring book that Beverly gave to her.
We also want to extend our deepest appreciation to Hospice of Savannah for their comfort and care during her last year with us.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister Marie Walker Bell. She is survived by her three children: Teresa Holloway Keesecker (Bob) of Big Canoe, GA; Rebecca (Becky) Holloway Prosser (Wayne) of Rabun Gap, GA; and Cindy Holloway Richardson of St. Simons Island, GA; six grandchildren Angela Keesecker Rupert, Kristen Michelle Keesecker, Justin Wayne Prosser, Gregory Alan Prosser (Ashley), Cortney Richardson Green, Ashley Lynn Richardson; seven great-grandchildren, Christin Ashley Rupert, Gillian Grace Rupert, Noah Travers Prosser, Kylie Gillian Green, Tyler Ashlynn Green, Cameron Thomas Green, and Tanner Terrance Green, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm on Wednesday October 21, at Baker McCullough Funeral Home on Hodgson Memorial Drive. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 12:00 noon at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend.
