It is with a smile and many tears that we regret to inform you that H. “Lynn” Rutherford (formerly of Savannah, GA) was taken home to glory on March 23, 2021. Lynn was 78 years old and lived in Winston-Salem, NC. Lynn loved his family, telling funny stories, haggling to get a deal, fishing, watching Westerns and singing country gospel hymns. He enjoyed attending church, helping others and was a true display of God’s grace and mercy.
The stories of Lynn’s misspent youth were epic and often left us wondering if they were true. He was a lifelong athlete who spent his youth on the basketball court. He instilled a love of sports in his children by actively coaching them on the ballfields, in gyms, in the pool, and on tennis courts whether it was welcomed or not. The stories from his childhood would later be matched by those from his time with United Parcel Service and later his retirement. Like all good fishermen, Lynn was not immune to embellishment.
Lynn’s work ethic was stronger than most and demonstrated by the countless hours a day adding up to the 25 years he dedicated to UPS. He later discovered that he equally enjoyed being retired as evidenced by his many “projects” around the house. He taunted his kids with text messages when the fishing was good asking why they were still at work and not out on the water with him. Fish feared him since he kept most everything he caught. His family will remember the many life lessons he shared, his fear of absolutely nothing, his ability to modify all things new and used (addition of cup holders included) and especially the time spent on the ocean and river skiing, shrimping and fishing, even when a picture of a beautiful sunset was the only catch of the day.
Not surprisingly, Lynn made us laugh, cry, and shake our heads. He taught us the value of a dollar, how to do things for ourselves, always do better than our best and hurry when he says it is time to go so we didn’t get miss our ride home. He left us with so many great memories, fun times and life lessons. He will be missed.
Lynn is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; son Christopher Rutherford (Meredith); daughters Lisa Hooks and Ashley Rutherford; granddaughter Emma Kate Hooks; sister Linda Jones (William); and sister-in-law Beth Yardman (Michael).
