George E. Thomas

George Earnest Thomas, 71, of Savannah, GA, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Candler Hospital.

George was born March 22, 1952, in Philadelphia, PA, to Bruce and Hazel Thomas. He was raised in Granby, CT, and graduated from Granby Memorial High School. He participated in the ROTC program at Norwich University, Northfield, VT, and graduated in 1974. He entered the Army and was stationed at Ft Knox, KY, as an Armor Officer. He later attended the Tactical Intelligence Course at Ft Huachuca, AZ. Following that he served in Korea for one year. His final duty station was Ft Stewart, GA. He ended his Active Duty in 1982 but continued in the Army Reserves for seventeen years. He served as a Reserve Officer in Savannah, then took the Command and General Staff Course. He eventually taught the course at Ft Stewart, GA, for many years while working for Civil Service. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In his Civil Service career, he was in Logistics Management at Ft Stewart and then was the Range Manager at Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, GA. He retired from Civil Service in 2014.

George enjoyed hunting, fishing, gunsmithing, boating, and model train building. He was active in the Coastal Rail Buffs Club organizing the club’s annual model train show for many years. He also was a vital member of the Girl Scout Camp Low ACT Committee helping to renovate, repair, and construct the camp’s various docks, buildings, and pavilions. He also helped install two floating docks for Camp Low that he towed with his boat from Coffee Bluff Marina to Camp Low. The latest project he was involved in was the expansion of their pond for fishing and boating activities.
Survivors include Christine, his wife of 39 years; his son Jeffrey of Savannah, GA; his son Michael and his wife Samantha of Fort Myers, FL; his brother Richard and his wife Angela Thomas of Tacoma, WA; his sister Beth and her husband Steve Wingate of McCormick, SC; and several cousins and a nephew.

There will be a Celebration of Life Friday, April 28, 2023, at 11:30 am, at White Bluff Presbyterian Church, 10710 White Bluff Rd, Savannah, GA, followed by a reception in the church Social Hall.
