George Leon Day, 72 of Savannah, died October 30, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born in Washington, North Carolina on June 11, 1948, to the late Alfred Oreon Day, Sr. and Viola Sawyer Day.
Originally from Charlotte, NC, he came to Savannah in 1988 by way of Charleston, SC. He was an entrepreneur all his life. He started and managed several successful businesses. His last Venture started in 1980, StaffCo, is now owned and run by his son and continues to be successful. George has always been active in the community. He served as President of multiple business and civic clubs such as Rotary, Small Business Chamber, West Chatham Exchange Club, Optimist Club, director of the YMCA, and others. He won many awards in the past for his service to the business community. In 2017, George was asked to join the Board of Savannah Care Center, a local Christian non-profit pregnancy resource center. He served as Chairman of the Board and interim Director until 2020. During his tenure, Savannah Care Center was transitioned to a medical facility to provide free ultrasounds to women facing unplanned pregnancy decisions.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple and most currently attending services at Compassion Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, William “Billy” Day.
Surviving are his wife of nine years, Claudia Miller Day; children, Paul Leon Day of Savannah, Cher Frances Day of Moncks Corner, SC, Jason Alan Day of Charleston, SC, George Leon Day, II (Megan) of Hampton, VA, Michael John Day of Hawaii, and Elliott Orion Day of Savannah; step-children, Amy Marie Beckling (John Beckling, III) of Savannah, Alisa Michelle Vallbracht (Jacob) of Richmond Hill, GA, Anna Nicole Yarbrough of Midway, GA, and Sarah Gaines (Steven) of Jedburg, SC; siblings, Julia Ann Brinkley, Albert “Buddy” Oreon Day, Jr., Betty Joyce Berry, and Patricia “Patsy” Day Cottrell; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Paul Day, Jason Day, George Day, Michael Day, Elliott Day, and Bob Cheripinsky.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Funeral services will be at Compassion Church East Campus on Old Montgomery Rd. in Savannah Friday, November 6th at 10:00 am. Rev. Buddy Day will be officiating. Interment will be at Beaufort National Cemetery.
