George Dewey Cain

September 21, 1931 — January 12, 2025

Savannah

USAF Major (Ret) George D. Cain, age 93, of Savannah, died Sunday, January 12, 2025, at his residence under the care of Savannah Hospice and surrounded by his loving family. George was born on September 21, 1931 in Cestos, Oklahoma to Noble Cain and Belle Terrel Cain. He graduated from Richmond High School were he was the valedictorian of his class of 1949. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Air Force in 1951.George was trained on the B-29 electrical and electronic systems and sent to Okinawa during the Korean War. There George had the great privilege of meeting the great USAF test pilots Major Yeager and Captain Collins. His electronic training enabled him make minor changes to the electrical system of a captured Russian Mig-15 being test flown by these test pilots. George was later assigned to Hunter AFB and the B-47. Here he began college training through Operation Bootstrap. In April 1955 he married Lois Cooler of Savannah. From Hunter AFB George went to Biggs AFB and Davis-Monthan AFB with the B-47 program. He was accepted into the OCS program and was commissioned in December 1958. George was assigned to the B- 52 program at Blytheville AFB as an Armament and Electronics officer and moved to the position of Maintenance Control Officer where he was responsible for the maintenance of 7 B-52s as well as the remaining aircraft for the daily flight schedule. During the Cuban missile crisis all 7 of his B-52s, with Hounddog missiles attached, launched and George was put on board a KC-135 refueling aircraft in route to Spain to recover them. In 1963 he was reassigned to the Titan II Missile program at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas. George had the honor of being the first replacement Combat Crew Commander to be assigned that position without serving as a deputy commander first. That might seem a small thing until you take into consideration that this missile carried the largest warhead in the US arsenal In 1968 George was assigned to Vandenberg AFB as the Titan II Missile Maintenance Test Officer. There he monitored all Titan II missile launches and worked with the US Army to provide Titan Il war- heads for their Safeguard Anti-Missile missile program. George completed his college education through Operation Bootstrap at Arkansas Tech and assigned to Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, as the Missile Maintenance Quality Control Officer over 200 Minuteman III Missiles scattered over the Eastern half of North Dakota. In June 1975, George retired at the rank of Major after 7 years enlisted and 17 years as a commissioned officer. The Cains moved to Hawaii for a short time and then to San Jose, CA, where George received his second degree at San Jose State College. He then joined his brother in the real estate business. In 1982 George fulfilled his promise to Lois to someday bring her back to Savannah. Here they built their home on the water front. He was a founding member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church and a honorary volunteer with the Mighty Eighth Museum. In his spare time he was an avid fisherman, could fix anything, and loved to read and study his Bible. He especially loved reading theology by Spurgeon. George was a family man, he loved his kids and grandkids. He valued education, church and the bible. He donated his theological library to seminary students and was described as the pastors pastor. George is preceded in death by his son, Lt. John Cain; his parents; a sister, Dorothy Margworth; and a brother, Allen Cain.
