Gayle Noel Jones, longtime Savannah resident, died Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Station Exchange Senior Care in Richmond Hill, GA.
Born in 1929 in Macedonia, Iowa, daughter of James Ezra and Tessie Barb Noel, she was the youngest of thirteen children. She graduated in 1945 from Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri. She met her husband, World War II Veteran and pilot Captain Forrest P. Jones, Jr. (USAF), while he was stationed at Whiteman AFB, and they moved to Savannah in 1954, when he was transferred to Hunter AAF. They immediately fell in love with Savannah and spent the rest of their lives here. They were married for 67 years, and Forrest preceded her in death in 2013.
Gayle was a decades-long member of White Bluff Presbyterian Church, where she was ordained both as a deacon and an elder. An enthusiastic performer of sacred music, she was the choir director there for 25 years. An avid reader, she retired after 20 years of working in the library at Savannah Country Day School. A believer in education and empowerment for girls and boys alike, she was a member of Chapter AT of the philanthropic organization P.E.O. Sisterhood for over 20 years.
She is survived by a son, Forrest K. Jones; three daughters and their spouses, Jill Jones Klotz (Jack), Leigh Jones Corbin (Phillip), Caroline Jones Miller (Kenneth); and five grandchildren, James Klotz (Patrick McComas), Jenny Klotz Brod (Brad), Joseph Miller, Forrest Corbin, Caroline Kate Miller, and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Brod.
The funeral will be held at White Bluff Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 10, at 10:30 a.m. with reception to follow. After the service, there will be a private burial at Forest Lawn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gayle's beloved White Bluff Presbyterian Church.
