Francisco Javier Guillen

December 3, 1936 — April 26, 2023

Francisco “Frank” Guillen, husband of Dorothy Augustyniak Guillen, died on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at St. Joseph’s/Candler hospital in Savannah, GA.

He was the son of Luis Ernesto Guillen and Rosita Arrazolla Guillen of San Salvador, El Salvador, now deceased, who immigrated to the United States when Frank was a teenager. They ultimately settled in New York.

Frank graduated from Mineola High School, Garden City, NY and attended Hofstra where he was a member of the university soccer team. He later transferred and graduated from Columbia University, NY with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Frank received his masters degree from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.

At the start of his marriage, Frank moved to Ellicott City, MD where he worked at Westinghouse Electric Corp. and Northrop Grumman for 35 years. He spent his career designing radar defense systems for military aircraft and satellite imagery. He was a long time member of St. Paul’s/Resurrection parish in Ellicott City. Frank was an avid sports enthusiast coaching his
children in multiple sports. He participated in starting the Columbia Soccer Association at Running Brook Elementary School which eventually became what is now SAC. Frank was an active tennis player at Forest Hill Swim & Tennis club.

After retirement, Frank resided in Ocean City, MD and Bluffton, SC where he was an active volunteer, golfer and photographer. Frank will always be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, storytelling and extreme generosity.

He is survived by wife of 62 years, Dorothy Augustyniak Guillen; daughter Michele Battinelli, and son-in-law John Frederick Battinelli, sons Gregory Guillen and daughter-in-law Stephanie Finck Guillen, Francisco Guillen, Jr. and daughter-in-law Susan Myers Guillen, Douglas Guillen; brother Dr. Louis Guillen (Ellen), sister Nomi Trapnell (Fritz), grandchildren Emily Masi, MD,
PhD (Paul Masi MD), John Francis Battinelli, DDS (Maelynn), Bethany Guillen, Brooke Guillen, Katherine Guillen, Madeline Deweese (Clay Deweese), Claire Guillen, Gabrielle Guillen, Emanuel Guillen, Matthew Guillen and beloved great grandchildren Maria Masi, Luisa Masi, and
“Poppy” Battinelli.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

For those unable to attend in person, the funeral service will be live streamed on Tuesday, May 9th, 2023 at 10am via FaceBook live. A FaceBook account is not required.
