Eugene Luther Everhart

February 28, 1938 — November 15, 2022

On November 15, 2022,Gene Everhart was called home by God to sing with the choirs of angels in Heaven. To know Gene was to know that to sing to the Lord was the request he built his faith upon.
Eugene Luther Everhart was born in Thomasville, North Carolina, to the late Thomas Luther and Leona Mae Black Everhart, February 28, 1938. A few years later, the family moved to Newport News, Virginia, in order for his father to be closer to his work at the Newport News Shipyard.
Gene graduated from Hampton High School, Hampton, Virginia, in 1956. He went on to take various college and trade classes to fine tune his skills. During those years, he spent an abundance of time learning welding and pipefitting from his father. Gene cherished, not only the valuable trade, but the time spent with his father was worth more than words can express.
After school, Gene went out into this great, big world to start his career. Throughout his career, he saw much of this great land. Following the Plumber, Steamfitters & Shipfitter Union, jobs took him from multiple states along the east coast, all the way to California, Washington, Oregon and back. Gene was highly skilled and earned many accolades and respect from his peers. He enjoyed experiencing so many places and meeting new friends along the way.
Gene also enjoyed ballroom and square dancing. He was a talented dancer and taught ballroom dancing at Author Murray and Fred Astaire Studios in Virginia and North Carolina.
Along Gene’s travels, he met a lovely lady by the name of Fran. They found a mutual love of travel, food, animals, dance (Gene loved twirling Fran around the dance floor), and especially the Lord and each other. They took the vows of man and wife on May 11,1983 in San Isidro, Tlaxcala, Mexico.
The happy couple traveled together until Gene’s career came to an end. Retirement brought Gene and Fran to Georgia. They found a sweet little place to begin enjoying their golden years together along with their precious, furry and feathered companions.
Gene was a talented bass singer and never shied from sharing his gift in the choir at churches he attended. Those of us fortunate enough to hear his voice could feel the love he held for our Lord. Many of his family and friends understood that singing was very important to him. His favorite niece recalls him more than once reciting a favorite verse from Psalms 104:33,
“I will sing to the Lord all my Life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”
Gene held family in highest regards. He gave thanks for his family each and every day. He walked his path with the assurance of a strong foundation given to him by his parents. He was blessed with more family through his marriage to Fran. He loved and cherished them as his own.
Along with his love of God, family, and song, his love for animals was absolutely beautiful. He was a friend in deed to all creatures. He spoke of the joy that animals give us and he revered the unconditional love that all animals demonstrate.
"A righteous man has regardeth the life of his beast." Proverbs 12:10
Gene was a humble man with many loves and passions. He was a cherished friend and a faithful servant to God.
"And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." 1 John 4:16
He attended Countryside Baptist Church in Guyton, Georgia. He was very active in the choir and loved the Old Fashioned Gospel Hymns.
Gene was preceded in death by his loving wife Fran, his amazing parents, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. We can only imagine the wondrous reunion that is happening there in Heaven!
Gene leaves to cherish his precious memory, his favorite and only sister, Mary Evelyn (Ebbie) Nicoletta of Hayes, Virginia; his awesome niece, Michelle E. Berryman of Hayes, Virginia; a terrific stepson, Jeffrey L. Poe, and his wife, Grace K. Poe of Ludowici, Georgia; four stepgrandsons, three stepgranddaughters, fourteen step great grandsons, eleven step great granddaughters, cousins, church friends and neighbors. He also leaves his precious furry babies in no particular order of importance, Hiny (actually, Hiny is the favorite), Pretty Face, Blackie, Ugg, White Paws, Pumpkin, Callie, Little Callie, Baby, and Red).
