Ernest Eugene Zittrouer, Sr., 94, passed away on December 28, 2020, after a brief illness.
He was proceeded in death by his wife of 64 years, Merle Jaudon Zittrouer.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of Corley and Mary Ruth Zittrouer. He was a graduate of Savannah High School. He was employed by GAF where he met his wife, and then was employed by the Georgia Ports Authority as a machinist.
He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and their United Methodist Men. He enjoyed doing yard work and working with his hands. Ernest and his best friend, James Floyd Akins, renovated and built the back room at Tubby's Tank House. He also completely renovated apartments on Jones Street in Savannah. He will be remembered for his low country boils, grilled pork chops, and love of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his sister Mary Ruth McMillan, his sons, Corley (Mary Lynn) Zittrouer, Ernest, Jr. (Linda) Zittrouer, and daughter Emily Chaffin; grandchildren, Brendan (Erica), Christopher (Hallie), Kayla, Kelsey, Ernest III, and Erik Zittrouer, Kathryn and Chadwick Chaffin, Jr, great grandsons Chapman and Landon Zittrouer. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings Randall and Richard Zittrouer, Hilda Morris and Kathryn Michaelson.
A private graveside ceremony will be held at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery.
