Ernest (Ernie) Oswell English, Jr. born in Savannah, Georgia on February 6. 1938 passed away in Savannah due to complications during hospitalization with his wife and daughter by his side. Ernie was a graduate of Savannah High School and attended Armstrong College. He served in the Navy and Coast guard Reserves, Seabees for 20 years. Ernie was a 57 year member of Landrum Lodge No 48 and had achieved Emeritus status. He was a member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church in Townsend, Georgia and served on the Building Committee for the new church construction efforts.
At 18 years of age, Ernie began his career as a helper in the pipeshop at International Paper, then known as Union Bag. He was promoted to pipefitter and then to foreman. He was later promoted to Assistant Superintendent of the Pulp Mill at Union Camp, International Paper. He retired in 2003 after 47 years of service.
Ernie is survived by his wife Helen Kirby English, his daughter Carla Damita English, his son Ernest (Trey) Oswell English III, a granddaughter Hunter Danielle English, and a sister Fredna Ammons. He is also survived by vast nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest O. English, Sr. and Sarah Louise Tillman and his daughter Helen Yvonne English. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dwight Allen English and Kerry Drake English and one sister, Jean Latrelle Wilkes.
It was St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, Georgia at Carson’s Boat Company when Ernie met Helen, the love of his life and future bride. Just a dance sealed the next 60+ years of adventures, including traveling, indulging in fine foods, fishing, and enjoying the blessings of their children’s lives. He supported his children with their passions and guided them with grace.
Above all else Ernie was a gracious and loving Father and Husband. His commitment to his faith, family, and friends was admired. While raising his family, he shared his love of the outdoors, historical events, coin collecting, and cooking. After retirement, Ernie and his wife Helen became adventurous travelers. Their wistful longing and yearning in the heart to explore life and common interests inspired their lives. Together, they learned, laughed, and made treasured memories to last a lifetime.

A visitation will be held Thursday, August 1, 2024 in Savannah at Baker McCullough located at 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00pm.
A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024 at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church located at 1282 Sutherland Road, Townsend, Georgia. Visitation and dinner will begin at 3:00pm in the social hall. Service and special remembrances will begin at 4:30pm in the church.
Ernie’s unwavering commitment to his faith and love for others is reflected in his family’s request for contributions to an organization or charity of your choice that supports Veterans or provides for Alzheimer care, treatment, and research in lieu of flowers.
