Elvin William Sims

February 19, 1947 — March 7, 2023

Elvin William Sims, also known as “Billy” or “Bill” Sims, was 76 years of age when he passed away of natural causes on March 7, 2023 in Savannah, GA.

Bill Sims was born on February 19, 1947, in Savannah, GA, the firstborn of Elvin Washington and Emma Mitchell Sims.  He briefly worked for his father at “Motor Supply Machine Shop” on E Lathrop Ave but left home in his twenties. His travels took him across this country.  Bill could be described as a person who wanted to enjoy his life to the fullest. When you hear the story of a person who doesn’t want to leave behind a beautiful body when they pass, but instead wants to come skidding across the finish line in a broken heap and a smile on their face – you could be thinking of Bill Sims.

Although he had lost touch with his family for years, he came back into the fold in 1995. Afterward he worked to renew his relationships with relatives - most notably his mother, whom he loved very much. He was also extremely fond and proud of his sister, Dianne Kessler.  In his later years, he set out on a mission to help those in need get back on their feet.  He practiced random acts of kindness, like buying strangers meals or groceries or giving shelter for those wanting a better life.

Elvin William Sims is survived by his sister, Dianne Kessler, his niece, Emily Adams, and two nephews, Bryan Black and Andrew Black. He has also left behind several friends that he has made throughout his years, some of whom he treated as adopted family.  He also loved his three dogs, Barney, Monty and Tripod, that were his “fur-babies”.

Billy Sims will be missed by his family and friends but he is with his family in Heaven and in no more pain after accepting Jesus Christ, as his Lord and Savior in the hospital.

The family will be receiving friends Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Sanctuary Church, 8912 Whitefield Ave, Savannah, GA 31406.

A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. following visitation.

Entombment will take place after the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, 315 Greenwich Rd, Savannah, GA 31404 after services.
