Elizabeth “Betty” Fort
Sophie Elizabeth “Betty” Fort, age 94, of Savannah passed away Thursday, April 29th. She was born on January 17, 1927. Betty was the first of five children born to Alford and Thelma Humphries. She graduated from Commercial High School in 1946. She married Lawrence Fort on May 25, 1946 and they celebrated 70 years of marriage before he passed away in 2017.
Betty was very strong in her faith and loved the Lord dearly. She was active in the United Methodist Women both in Clarkston, GA and at Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church on Tybee Island, GA. She was also a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Disabled American Veterans #8 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart #596, holding leadership roles in both organizations.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her sister Alice Warren and her brothers Fred Humphries and Buddy Humphries. She is survived by her brother Earl Humphries (Ann) sons and daughters in law, Larry and Linda Fort and Dan and Nina Fort; granddaughters Kerry Coursey (Jamie), Alison Bayes (Mike), Carla Dockery (Christopher), Sara Fort, Maria Lauman (Mark) and great-grandchildren Peyton, Avery, Katelyn, Taylor, Ryan, Matthew, Levi, Mark and John as well as many nieces and nephews that loved her so much.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, May 2nd at 1:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Blue Sky Acres Program (

) or to the children’s ministries at Islands Christian Church.
