The Bean family is sad to announce the passing of our patriarch, Eldon Lewis Bean. He was the rock of our family in Savannah and will be missed tremendously by his family and friends.
Eldon was born in Topeka, Kansas where he completed high school at Silver Lake High School. He was a self-taught computer programmer and continued in this profession until his retirement in 1988, founding multiple businesses during this tenure.
He married the love of his life, Patricia Stewart in 1953 and moved to the Savannah area with his young family in 1957. Eldon and Pat had three children, Ellen Gabrielson, Thomas Bean and Richard Bean (Julie). He had five grandchildren, Steven Gabrielson, Patrick Bean (Amanda), Jessica Bean Hendley (Joe), Matthew Bean and Scott Bean. He had two great-grandchildren, Julian Bamberg and Beau Bean.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Pat in 2013, his brother-in-law Mike Hogan of Topeka, Kansas, his sister Donna Chapman and brother-in-law Joe Chapman of Manhattan, Kansas, his sister Margie Litchford of Lynchburg, Virginia, and his brother-in-law Rudy Simpson of Spartanburg, South Carolina. He is survived by his sisters Margie Hogan of Topeka, Kansas and Virginia Simpson of Spartanburg, South Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
Eldon was an avid and proficient musician throughout his life, playing the guitar, but also took up the pedal steel guitar, the fiddle and the mandolin. He was a founding member of the Rambling Knights Band with the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council #5588 of Savannah, a group that played for shut-ins at local nursing homes from Savannah to Dublin, Georgia. He was a fourth degree member of the council, and also volunteered delivering meals to seniors for Senior Citizens in Savannah. He enjoyed golf tremendously, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus #5588 blitz and the Senior Blitz in Savannah.
A viewing will be held at Bonaventure Funeral Home on Bonaventure Road in Savannah on Sunday, October 8th, 2017 from 6 pm to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home chapel on Monday, October 9th, 2017 at 11 am.
