Edna Ucilla Casey Smith

April 19, 1927 — June 2, 2021

Edna Smith passed away Wednesday June 2, 2021 at home with her family at her side.

She was born in Charleston, S.C. to Dee Guy Casey and Ruth Louise Collett, April 19, 1927. Upon the death of her father in 1940, she and her sisters Helen and Constance were placed in St. Mary’s Catholic Orphanage in Savannah and lived there until she graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy in 1945. In 1964, at Willow Grove, PA., she married 1st Lt. Jimmy P. Smith, Jr. US Army, and they had 57 wonderful years together in numerous stations overseas and in the U.S.  Wherever she was, she was active in water safety instruction with the Red Cross and always seemed to find a swim team that was in need of her guidance and training.

Edna was a member of the DAR and UDC.  She was extremely proud of her heritage and her family and was an exceptional researcher of genealogy. She was also an active member of Garden City United Methodist Church and the Hook’s Circle and whenever possible never missed an outing with the Prime Timers.  Edna Smith will be missed and remembered by all who came in contact with her over her 94 years of life.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by sisters, Helen Elizabeth Wright and Constance Earnestine Hoffman; brothers, Dee Guy Casey, Jr. and Michael Jackson Casey; sons-in-law, David Watkins and Ron Jordan.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy P. Powell, Jr.; her six children, Jeanette Delores Peche (Fred); Donna Watkins; Debra Sabrina Jordan; William Rudolph Boykin (Maryanne); Efrayim Ben-Avraham (Shawn) and Bonnie Boykin Hicks (Herbert); 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.

The family would like to thank all of the loving and caring employees of Compassus Hospice who made her final journey as peaceful as possible.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2021 from 5-7PM at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 11AM in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Ben Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery.
