Dorothy Elliot Foskey Carter

April 17, 1941 — September 11, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dorothy Elliot Foskey Carter, matriarch of the Carter family, into the arms of her Lord and Savior September 11, 2024.

A native of Stillmore, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Herbert A. Foskey and Luna Lee Lanier Foskey. The family relocated to Savannah while Dorothy was very young.

Dorothy was described by her loved ones as Godly, good mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a beacon of love and kindness. She served as Sunday School Teacher for many years. Dorothy's life was a testament to her faith, and she often reminded those around her with the comforting words, "If you know the Master of the wind and the anchor of the sea, you'll be OK."

Dorothy's life was filled with meaningful moments and cherished memories. One of the most significant events in her life was marrying her beloved husband, Laney, on December 13, 1956. Their union was a beautiful example of love and commitment, and it set the foundation for the wonderful family they built together.

Professionally, Dorothy dedicated herself to nurturing young minds as a Teacher's Assistant at Savannah Country Day School for 27 years. Her passion for education and her genuine care for her students left a lasting impact on many lives. Dorothy's colleagues and students remember her as a compassionate and patient mentor who always had a kind word and a warm smile.

Outside of her professional life, Dorothy had a variety of interests and hobbies, including caring for her yard and flowers. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Dorothy's love for her family was evident in everything she did, and she took great pride in being a good mother and grandmother. She loved to be with her family around the holidays.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by her loving husband, Laney Carter and siblings, Howard Foskey, Jackie Whitfield and Frankie Kicklighter.

Surviving to cherish her memory are children, Laney Lee Carter (Susan), Mary Ann Wilson (Glen), Jeffrey Carter (Melanie) and Melissa Hampton (William); grandchildren, Mollie Carter, Peyton Carter, Tyler Wilson, Erin Slaven, Emily Banks, Will Hampton, Carter Hampton and Taylor Hampton; great-grandchildren, Noah, Kennedi, Rhett, Levi, Layne, Ryan, Delaney and Linley.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 17, 2024 from 10-11am. Funeral services will be held at 11am in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Josh Peavy officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey East.
