Doris Lowther was born in July 7, 1922 in Providence, Rhode Island. She passed away on January 1, 2024 after a very sudden decline in her health. Doris had the privilege of seeing her 101 st birthday this past July.
Doris is survived by three of her children, Arthur Leon Lowther, Jr, Donna Lynne Berry and Mary Elizabeth Deloach. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Leon Lowther, Sr., her son Geoffrey Lowther and her daughter Deborah Lowther. She was the proud grandmother of ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Doris and her husband “Chick” (originally from Ridgeland, SC) met in 1941 and were married on June 6, 1942, when Doris was 18 years old. “Chick” was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent most of his career abroad while Doris raised and cared for their 5 children. Doris followed “Chick” to his different duty stations while in the US Navy, their return to “Chick’s” hometown of Ridgeland, SC and later a move to Savannah, Georgia where Doris resided for the remainder of her life. Although Doris lived in the country as was her husbands preference, Doris was more of a city-girl.
Doris Lowther was one of the most poised and polished women you would ever meet. Never a hair out of place. She had her hair appointment scheduled each week, and attended church each week until she was forced to slow down. If she couldn’t attend in person, she would attend mass on TV and always said her prayers each day. At her 100th birthday party, which she shared with devoted friends and family, she could be seen dancing to music of days past, and only needing a cane for support. Doris loved to dance. It was her passion. Her other passion was her devotion to God. Her love and commitment to God was unwavering. In fact, when she and “Chick” married, it was her devotion that converted him to Catholicism.
Her joy in life was in reading her bible, spending time with her extended family and of course, her love of dancing. Everyone that met Doris could not believe she had turned 101 years old. She had that youthful appearance, and had the fullest life until God called her home. The family feels blessed that they had so much time with her and that she passed quickly and without suffering. May she rest in peace.
