Donnie William Tyson Sr., 87, of Savannah, GA, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at home surrounded by his family.
A native of Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Birdie Eugene Tyson and Annie English Tyson.
Mr. Tyson was raised in Savannah and attended Chatham County Schools. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve, serving honorably for a number of years. Following his time in the military, Mr. Tyson was self-employed as a Heavy Machinery mechanic. He earned a reputation all over Savannah as the best crane mechanic in the area and was the man to reach out to as the foremost heavy machinery mechanic.
He was a charter member of Silk Hope Baptist Church where he served in various capacities including Youth Sunday School teacher, RA leader and was a Deacon. He was a Mason.
Mr. Tyson was a loving and caring man who never met a stranger. He enjoyed meeting new people and talking with them.
In his free time, Mr. Tyson enjoyed speed. He loved to go fast, whether on land or on the water. He was known to race jet skis when he could and also drag raced one of his pick-up trucks.
In addition to his parents, Donnie is preceded in death by a son, Steven "Stevie" Tyson, five brothers, one sister and a son-in-law.
Survivors include his loving wife, Betty Mays Tyson; sons, Donnie W. Tyson, Jr. (Debbie) and Richard Tyson (Janet); daughters, Terry Stirling, Julia Gorgorette and Joy Harper (Andy); sister, Juanita Sparks; 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2024, 1:15pm at Silk Hope Baptist Church, 4929 Pineland Drive, Savannah. The family will receive friends from Noon until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
