Danny Kyle Smith, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away at home on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Danny was born in Harlan county, Kentucky to Charles David and Delida Fillippinni Smith on August 14, 1931. His mother died at an early age leaving Danny, at age 5, to be raised by his father and three older brothers, O.D. Smith, Q.T. Smith and J.R. Smith. Danny graduated from Middlesboro High School in Kentucky. After obtaining his father's consent, Danny enlisted in the Air Force in 1949 at the age of seventeen.
After training at Lackland Air Force Base, Danny was sent to Travis Field Air Base in Savannah which later moved to Hunter Army Air Force Base. Danny attended dances at the old Seaman Home located then on St. Julian Street. His future wife, Helen, lived in the same neighborhood at that time. Danny married D. Helen Bolton while stationed at Hunter Air Force Base. Danny earned his Technical stripe and Master Sergeant stripe before leaving Hunter Air Field. Danny was in the first group chosen to participate in the new missile program which the United States had begun. The Airmen attended school in Van Nuyes, California for their missile training. Returning to Savannah, Danny was transferred to England. After a short tour in England, he returned to SAC Heqdquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. His next duty station was Vandenberg Air Force Base in California where he was involved in the Atlas Missile Program. Danny was awarded Senior and Chief Master Sergeant stripes while stationed at Vandenberg. While living in California, he would take his son, Jimmy, deep sea fishing and hunting in the mountains along with his dog, Sam. His final duty station was Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he was involved with the Minute Man and Titan Programs. While there, Danny often took Jimmy to hunt elk and other game. Danny's tour of duty ended in March of 1969. He was also a veteran of the Korean War.
Returning to Savannah, Georgia with his family, Danny started his career with Candler Hospital. He began in the Maintenance Department as Supervisor and was promoted over the years to Vice President. During his time with Candler, he was responsible for the actual construction of the current hospital on Derenne Avenue.
He was a member of several clubs and organizations. He particularly enjoyed being a member of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and having his grandson, Shawn, march with him in the parade. He never missed any of Shawn's football games. Danny enjoyed sitting on his dock spending time with his family and friends .Danny is survived by his wife, Helen, his son, Jimmy (Barbara), his grandson, Shawn (Kristi) and his twin, great-grandsons, Haris and Wynn Smith, whom he lovingly nicknamed, "The Chatterboxes".
