Cynthia Ann Byrd

August 1, 1939 — October 23, 2023

Cynthia Ann Byrd, age 84, of Savannah, Georgia passed away Monday, October 23, 2023.

Cynthia was born to the parents of Icie Elezabeth Sandy Rowand and Clarence Vilter Rowand in West Virginia. She later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she worked as a bartender. It was there that one night she got snowed in at work with a few customers and met Richard E. Byrd. The two became inseparable and later married in 1963.

Cynthia was very INDEPENDENT, energetic, and strong willed. Nobody ever told her what to do. She would wake up in the morning with a plan and take off. She never liked to stay still. This is one of the many reasons her and her husband enjoyed traveling. She loved to explore new places. Two of Cynthia's most memorable vacations are the time they took months traveling along the Continental Shelf of the United States in their van, and the Alaskan cruise they embarked on. She talked forever about the bears and moose they encountered. Cynthia was always happy and loved to meet new people, she was the peacekeeper and matriarch of the family, and had a green thumb and could grow anything. She loved her three sons. However, her grandkids were her heart. She had no problems showing up unannounced and collecting all her grandchildren to go on one of her many adventures.

Cynthia is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Richard E. Byrd Sr.; her parents, Icie Elezabeth Sandy Rowand, and Clarence Vilter Rowand; her brother, Raymond Lester Rowand; and her sister, Corda Maude Martin.

Cynthia is survived by her three sons, Richard E. Byrd Jr. (Tory), Jesse M. Byrd (Stephanie), Patrick S. Byrd (Alison); six grandchildren, Richard Edward Byrd III, Jessica Ann Brown (Jacob), Kayla Elizabeth Hadel (Jonathan), Lily Welles Byrd, Abigail Grace Byrd, and Mason Edward Byrd, and her brother, Clarence Eugene Rowand.

A memorial service will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2023 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31406.
