Chester Gary Wilkes

Chester Gary Wilkes, 91, of Garden City, GA, passed away on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024 at his home surrounded by his daughters and under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc.

He was born on November 23rd, 1932 in Tattnall, GA to the late Mattie McNear Wilkes and the late D. Chester Wilkes.

Chester proudly served in the Navy and later worked as an Oiler Supervisor for Union Camp Corporation until his retirement in 1994. He was a past president of the Local Union 388 and enjoyed the 2nd Tuesday Breakfast Club at Western Sizzlin in Pooler for the Union Camp Retirees. Chester had a passion for fishing and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents. his wife, Stella Mae Layne Wilkes, children, Ernie Ashcraft and Brenda Davis, and sons-in-law, Steven Bell, Sr. and Curtis Garland.

Chester will be dearly missed by his daughters, Rita Buck (Marion) and Patty Garland; sister, Susie Rowland; brother, ID Wilkes; grandchildren, Shannon Campbell (Brian), Gary Davis (Staci), Steven Bell (April), Joshua Garland, James Buck, MD Buck, and 8 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Garden City Chapel on Friday, April 5th, 2024 at 2:00 pm with visitation prior from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren whom he loved dearly, helped raise, and taught his strong work ethic and family values. Shannon Campbell, Gary Davis, Steven Bell, Joshua Garland, James Buck, MD Buck, Michael Campbell.
