Charles L. Morris, Sr., age 90, passed away on October 8, 2022, in Port Orange, Florida. Charles was born in Soperton, Georgia on April 1, 1932. Charles was really a humorous guy. He often said “the biggest April fool’s joke was played on his mother.” He was raised in Savannah, GA at Washington Square. He loved the Old Fort Area. Though Troup Square was a rival area, he became a loyal supporter as that is where he met his future wife, Joan Towns. They were married for 58 years. Charles served a memorable four years in the Air Force. His most vivid memories while serving were of his ship ride to Morocco and his time spent there as an Air Police. After the Air Force, Charles packed his family up and relocated to Miami, Florida where he attended the University of Miami. Charles took a job at MaryCarter Paints which brought the family to Azuza, California. He was promoted and the family moved again to Little Rock, Arkansas. After a brief stay, they moved back to Miami and he took a job at the U.S. Post Office in 1966. In 1971, he transferred to Gainesville, Florida. When Charles retired from the Postal Service in 1992, he and Joan moved back to their hometown of Savannah. Charles and Joan moved to Port Orange, FL, in 1999 to be closer to family. Never ask Charles to pass you a piece of bread at dinner, unless you liked your bread with a hole punch in it. We will all miss the fun and stories. Charles acquired the nickname “Grumpy” from one of the family members. The name stuck and he became “Grumpy” to all.
Charles was a great athlete. He loved his family, sacrificing many desires for any and all. He was an exceptional scholar and author, writing poetry and books. Each time a familymember achieved a degree, Charles received a new honorary title, including a Master’s in Business Administration. His last writing project was translating the bible into layman’s terms.
Though Charles maybe gone from our sight, he believed the Lord would be waiting, saying “Here he comes”.Charles is proceeded in death by his wife, Joan Towns Morris, and his daughter, Debra Chaffin. He is survived by his two sons, Charles “Butch” Morris and Dana Morris, and a daughter, Tami Morris Rohland. Additionally, he is survived by 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many, many more wonderful relatives. He would say, “remember, it is a poor frog that won’t praise his own pond.”
